European Union Plans 2025 Military Exercise for Peacekeeping Deployment in Ukraine
The European Union is set to conduct a large-scale military exercise in 2025, involving 50,000 troops, to rehearse a potential peacekeeping deployment to Ukraine. This preparatory move comes after French President Emmanuel Macron's remarks earlier this year regarding the possibility of Western forces operating in Ukraine, which drew varied responses from European capitals.
While Western officials have consistently stated that any such force would not participate in offensive operations, the planning underscores a longer-term strategic consideration for the region. The exercise is intended to test the logistical and operational capabilities required for a substantial presence, should a future peace agreement necessitate an international stabilising force. Such a deployment, if it ever materialises, would represent a significant shift in the West's engagement with the conflict, moving beyond arming Ukraine to a direct, albeit non-combat, military presence.
The emphasis remains on peacekeeping roles, which typically involve monitoring ceasefires, protecting civilians, and ensuring humanitarian aid delivery. However, the precise nature and scope of any future mission would ultimately depend on the terms of a negotiated settlement and the geopolitical landscape at the time of its potential implementation.
