Former Nottinghamshire Police Officer Ryan Theaker Jailed for Rape After Victim Recorded Attack
Former Nottinghamshire Police officer Ryan Theaker has been sentenced to 10 years in prison after being found guilty of rape. The 30-year-old subjected a woman to an 82-minute assault, which the victim covertly recorded. The recording captured her telling Theaker 'get off me' approximately 300 times during the attack.
During the sentencing at Nottingham Crown Court, Judge Gregory Dickinson KC commended the victim's bravery in recording and reporting the incident, noting the 'harrowing' evidence presented to the court. The judge underscored the profound impact on the victim, stating that the attack had 'shattered' her sense of safety and trust.
Theaker, who resigned from Nottinghamshire Police following his arrest, was initially charged in May 2023. The investigation was handled by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) due to his status as a serving officer at the time of the offence. The IOPC's regional director, Derrick Campbell, acknowledged the victim's immense courage and stated that the recording was crucial in securing the conviction.
A police misconduct hearing will now determine if Theaker will be added to the College of Policing's barred list, which would prevent him from ever working in policing again. This case once again spotlights the ongoing concerns regarding institutional failures and the prevalence of serious misconduct within UK police forces, particularly offences against women, highlighting a persistent crisis of confidence for the public.
