Repaired E-Bike Battery Caused Fatal Cambridge Fire, Killing Three
A fatal house fire in Cambridge, which claimed the lives of Gemma Germeney, 31, and her two young children, Lilly, eight, and Oliver, four, was caused by a previously repaired e-bike battery, an inquest has determined. The blaze originated from the lithium-ion power unit of an electric bicycle.
The Coroner's Court heard evidence indicating the e-bike battery, situated near the front door of the family's dwelling, had been subject to repair. This intervention on the battery’s integrity is understood to have compromised its safety, leading to its catastrophic failure and the subsequent inferno.
This incident underscores the significant risks associated with unregulated repairs and modifications to lithium-ion batteries, which are prevalent in e-bikes and other personal electric vehicles. Experts routinely caution against tampering with these power sources, highlighting the potential for thermal runaway and explosive fires, which can spread rapidly and generate toxic fumes.
