Former Parliament Employee Arrested in Coventry Under Computer Misuse Act, Released on Bail
Counter-terrorism policing units have commenced an investigation following the arrest of a former parliamentary employee last week. The 40-year-old man was apprehended on Thursday at a property in Coventry by detectives from the Metropolitan Police's counter-terrorism command.
The arrest was made under the provisions of the Computer Misuse Act 1990, a statute designed to safeguard digital information from unauthorised access and manipulation. Following questioning, the individual has been released on bail, effective until July, with the allegations specifically relating to his period of employment within Parliament.
Speaker of the House of Commons, Sir Lindsay Hoyle, briefly addressed what he termed a "security matter" to MPs on Monday. He confirmed an ongoing police investigation, stating that details would not be discussed on the floor of the House and pledging updates once more information could be shared.
A spokesperson for Parliament acknowledged awareness of the arrest under the Computer Misuse Act 1990. Citing the live police investigation, the spokesperson declined to comment further, reiterating that the safety and security of all individuals working in or visiting Parliament remains a priority.
