Former South African President Jacob Zuma Meets Atul Gupta in Dubai, Reigniting Corruption Concerns
Former South African President Jacob Zuma recently met Atul Gupta, a businessman implicated in a major corruption scandal, in Dubai. The encounter has drawn sharp criticism from within South Africa, with Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni stating Zuma was showing the country the “middle finger”.
The meeting took place despite an Interpol red notice for Atul Gupta, sought by South African authorities on charges of money laundering and fraud. Atul, along with his brothers Rajesh and Tony, fled South Africa following accusations of extensive influence peddling and corruption during Zuma’s presidency. The scandal, widely known as ‘state capture’, involved allegations that the Guptas leveraged their close ties to Zuma to secure lucrative state contracts and illicitly divert public funds.
Zuma’s office confirmed the meeting, stating it was a private encounter that occurred while the former president was en route to Iran for a conference. This explanation, however, has failed to placate critics who view the meeting as a deliberate affront to ongoing efforts to address corruption and hold accountable those responsible for past abuses.
The Guptas are accused of plundering billions of rands from state-owned enterprises, with estimates suggesting losses to the South African economy running into the tens of billions of GBP. Despite multiple attempts, including an arrest in Dubai in 2022, Atul Gupta has evaded extradition to South Africa.
