Green Party Returns £450,000 Donation From Roman Polanski, Citing Electoral Law Breach
The Green Party has confirmed the return of a £450,000 donation from film director Roman Polanski. The party stated that the contribution was deemed 'inadmissible' because Polanski is not registered to vote in the UK, a necessary criterion under British electoral regulations for donations exceeding £500.
The substantial sum, intended to bolster the Green Party's general election campaign, was received shortly following Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's announcement of a snap general election for 4 July. This rapid turnaround in donations highlights the immediate financial implications of the electoral calendar for political organisations.
Under the Political Parties, Elections and Referendums Act 2000, political parties in the UK are prohibited from accepting donations of more than £500 from individuals not on a UK electoral register. This legal framework is designed to ensure transparency and accountability in political funding, limiting foreign influence on domestic elections.
A spokesperson for the Green Party confirmed the immediate return of the funds upon identifying the registration discrepancy. The party emphasised its commitment to adhering strictly to all electoral commission guidelines and financial regulations.
