Frimley Park Hospital Rebuild Faces Further Delays Over Site Suitability, MP Al Pinkerton States
Al Pinkerton, the Member of Parliament for Guildford, has reiterated his concerns regarding the proposed location for the new Frimley Park Hospital. He described the site as 'fundamentally unsuitable', casting further doubt on the project's timeline and efficacy.
The hospital, which serves a wide area across Surrey, Berkshire, and Hampshire, has been awaiting a rebuild for an extended period. The current facility faces numerous structural issues, including the presence of reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC), a material prone to collapse, in its roof. This has led to calls for urgent replacement to ensure patient and staff safety.
Pinkerton stated that he had raised his objections directly with Labour's Shadow Health Secretary, Wes Streeting. However, he expressed disappointment with the response received, characterising it as failing to address the substantive issues he had highlighted regarding the site's viability. This suggests a continued political impasse over the project's future.
The protracted nature of the rebuild, coupled with the MP's strong opposition to the chosen site, indicates that the provision of a modern, fit-for-purpose medical facility in the region faces continued challenges. The emphasis remains on securing a location that can adequately serve the community's needs without compromising future development or accessibility.
