Former Transport Minister Robert Goodwill Admits Using Mobile Phone While Driving
Robert Goodwill, the Conservative MP for Scarborough and Whitby, has confessed to operating a mobile phone whilst driving, an action he described as a "moment of stupidity" that he now "deeply regrets". The admission follows the emergence of a video depicting Mr Goodwill using his phone in a moving vehicle.
The incident occurred on a Sunday morning, with the footage capturing the former minister holding his phone to his ear. Mr Goodwill indicated he had received an urgent call, but acknowledged that using a hands-free device was the appropriate course of action.
Under current UK legislation, drivers face a £200 fine and six penalty points for using a hand-held mobile phone at the wheel. Mr Goodwill served as a transport minister between 2013 and 2017 under both David Cameron and Theresa May's administrations. His portfolio included areas pertaining to road safety and driving regulations, making his transgression particularly notable.
