Four Arrested in Connection with 1991 Murder of Georgina Gharsallah
Kent Police have apprehended four suspects as part of an ongoing investigation into the murder of Georgina Gharsallah, who vanished from Worthing, West Sussex, in March 1991. The arrests, made 32 years after her disappearance, were announced following a cold case review that leveraged advancements in forensic science.
Ms. Gharsallah was last seen on 7 March 1991, leaving her home in Clifton Road, Worthing, aged 30. Despite extensive initial enquiries, her whereabouts remained unknown for decades. Her family endured years of uncertainty, with Sussex Police upgrading the case to a murder investigation in 2017.
A 50-year-old man from Liphook, Hampshire, and a 52-year-old man from Worthing were arrested on suspicion of murder. Additionally, a 63-year-old woman from Worthing was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender. All three have been released on bail while enquiries continue. A fourth individual, a 45-year-old man from Worthing, was arrested on suspicion of perverting the course of justice, also released on bail.
Detective Chief Inspector Jo Hall, from the Surrey and Sussex Major Crime Team, stated that the arrests demonstrate the unwavering commitment to resolving cold cases. She emphasised that new information and forensic capabilities have allowed investigators to revisit evidence with renewed prospects for identification and prosecution.
The force reiterated that the investigation remains active and urged anyone with information, no matter how insignificant it may seem, to come forward. They specifically appealed to individuals who may have withheld information previously due to loyalties or fear, highlighting that circumstances and allegiances can change over time.
