France Records 301 Drowning Deaths Since June 19 Amid Heatwave Conditions
France has documented 301 drowning deaths across the country since 19 June, a figure linked by government officials to the series of heatwaves encouraging recreational water use. Hervé Berville, the maritime minister, stated that individuals are engaging in risky behaviour by entering water under hazardous conditions.
Data released by Santé Publique France indicates a 60% increase in accidental drownings in children under six during the period from June to August 2021, compared to the 2018-2019 average. The current reporting period extends from 1 June to 31 July 2022, though the 301 deaths specifically apply from 19 June.
Authorities have highlighted the danger of entering cold water rapidly after prolonged sun exposure, particularly for older individuals and those with pre-existing health conditions, as this can induce thermal shock or hydrocution. The ongoing heatwaves across Europe have seen temperatures reach and exceed 40°C in many regions, prompting increased public health warnings regarding water safety.
