Gatwick Runway Blocked: EasyJet Diversions and Fuel Shortages Disrupt Flights
Several flights bound for London Gatwick Airport experienced diversions following an incident where an aircraft became immobilised on the main runway. The operational disruption necessitated air traffic control to redirect incoming planes to alternative hubs, including London Stansted and London Luton airports.
One such diverted aircraft, an EasyJet flight carrying 180 passengers that had departed from Fuerteventura, was rerouted to Stansted. However, the flight then encountered further complications, becoming stranded at Stansted for an extended period. The airline cited a lack of available fuel at Stansted as the reason for the prolonged delay, preventing the aircraft from taking off to complete its journey to Gatwick or disembarking passengers.
Passengers on the affected EasyJet flight reported being held on the tarmac for several hours. This incident underscores the cascading effects of runway closures, where initial operational issues can lead to secondary logistical challenges, particularly concerning resource availability at diversion airports.
