The global ocean surface temperature reached an unprecedented high in July, registering at 20.96C (69.73F). This figure, compiled by the EU's Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S), surpassed the previous record set in 2016. Data indicates that ocean temperatures have maintained consistent record highs since April of the current year.
Scientists from C3S have pointed to the developing El Niño climate pattern as a significant factor in these escalating temperatures.
