Guinean Teenager Mamadou Djouma Bah Dies in Prison After Exam Cheating Conviction

Mamadou Djouma Bah, a 17-year-old from Guinea, has died in detention, according to his father, just weeks after receiving a prison sentence for allegedly cheating in a school exam. Mr. Bah’s father claims his son, who suffered from sickle cell anaemia, succumbed to complications of his illness, exacerbated by the harsh prison environment.

The teenager was arrested earlier this month and subsequently sentenced to three months in prison by a court in Kindia, a city 135 kilometres (84 miles) east of the capital, Conakry. His conviction was part of a broader government crackdown on exam fraud, which has seen numerous students and officials detained across the country.

Human rights organisations have condemned the Guinean government's punitive approach to exam fraud, arguing that detaining minors for such offences constitutes a severe overreach. Critics contend that these measures disproportionately affect vulnerable individuals and highlight the systemic issues within Guinea's judicial and penal systems, particularly concerning the treatment of young people and those with pre-existing health conditions.
