Harvey Weinstein Receives 15-Year Prison Sentence for Sexual Assault in Los Angeles

Harvey Weinstein, the disgraced former Hollywood producer, has been sentenced to 15 years in a California prison for rape and sexual assault. This sentence will be served consecutively to the 23-year term he is already serving in New York for similar offences, effectively meaning he will spend the rest of his life incarcerated.

A Los Angeles jury convicted Weinstein in December 2022 of three counts of rape and sexual assault against a European actress, identified as 'Jane Doe 1', following a 2013 incident. He was acquitted on charges involving a second accuser and the jury remained deadlocked on allegations from two others, including Jennifer Siebel Newsom, the wife of California's governor.

During the sentencing, the victim addressed the court, stating the assault had a “devastating effect on my life and sense of security that may never go away.” The prosecution had requested a sentence of 24 years, while Weinstein’s defence sought a lighter, concurrent sentence, citing his age and health.

Weinstein, 70, attended the hearing in a wheelchair. His legal team has indicated plans to appeal the Los Angeles conviction, mirroring their ongoing appeal against his New York conviction.
