Holly Newton's Family Secures Law Change After 15-Year-Old's Murder by Ex-Boyfriend
The family of Holly Newton, a 15-year-old who was fatally stabbed by her ex-boyfriend in Northumberland, has successfully campaigned for a change in the law. This legislative amendment aims to prevent similar tragedies, almost two years after Holly's death.
Holly was murdered in Hexham on 27th January 2023 by her former partner, who was 16 at the time. The perpetrator, who cannot be named for legal reasons, received a minimum 16-year sentence.
Holly's parents, Mairi and Jason Newton, have worked tirelessly to ensure their daughter's death was not in vain. Their advocacy has resulted in a commitment from authorities to amend legislation, specifically targeting the circumstances that allowed her killer to commit such a heinous act. This development signifies a tangible outcome of the family's determined efforts to seek justice and prevent future harm.
