Sizewell C Rail Junction Completes Nine-Day Upgrade as Network Rail Announces
Essential rail infrastructure upgrades for the Sizewell C nuclear power station have been finalised, Network Rail announced today. The work, which took nine days to complete, focused on a critical junction located just south of Saxmundham, Suffolk.
This extensive upgrade facilitates the rail delivery of construction materials to the Sizewell C site. EDF, the project developer, has committed to transporting 60% of all materials by rail or sea to mitigate the substantial impact on local road networks.
The rail line, part of the East Suffolk line, connects to a new 6.5km private siding currently under construction. This dedicated siding will allow direct access for freight trains carrying aggregate, cement, and other essential supplies for the nuclear facility.
Network Rail confirmed that over 100 metres of track were replaced as part of the project, including points and signalling equipment. This investment underscores the significant logistical challenge of constructing such a large-scale energy project while attempting to manage its environmental and community footprint.
