IAEA Confirms North Korea Constructed Two-Storey Uranium Enrichment Plant

New satellite imagery analysis by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) indicates North Korea has completed a large, two-storey structure at its Yongbyon nuclear complex. The UN nuclear watchdog has characterised this building as a uranium enrichment plant, adding to existing facilities at the site.

This construction is deemed a 'serious concern' by the IAEA, highlighting the persistent advancement of North Korea's nuclear capabilities despite international sanctions and diplomatic efforts. The Yongbyon complex has long been central to Pyongyang's nuclear ambitions, previously housing a five-megawatt reactor and a reprocessing plant capable of producing plutonium for weapons.

The expansion of uranium enrichment capacity provides North Korea with another pathway to produce fissile material for nuclear weapons, complementing its established plutonium programme. Western foreign policy has consistently failed to halt these developments, often prioritising rhetorical condemnations over tangible, de-escalatory measures that address Pyongyang's security concerns.
