Indian Activist G. D. Agrawal's Hunger Strike Enters Day Sixteen, Health Deteriorates
G. D. Agrawal, an 86-year-old Indian environmental activist, continues his hunger strike for the sixteenth consecutive day, with medical observations indicating a significant decline in his health. Agrawal has reportedly lost 8.2 kilogrammes during his protest, which aims to compel the Indian government to implement measures protecting the Ganges River.
Demands for Ganges Protection
Agrawal, a former professor, initiated his fast to pressure authorities into enforcing stringent regulations against pollution and the construction of hydroelectric dams along the Ganges. He argues these projects severely impact the ecological integrity and cultural significance of the sacred river. His deteriorating condition has led to calls from supporters for immediate governmental intervention.
His protest highlights broader concerns regarding environmental policy and the implementation of existing laws in India, particularly concerning revered natural resources like the Ganges. The activist’s sustained hunger strike underscores the persistent challenges in balancing developmental goals with environmental preservation in the region.
