Unionist and loyalist communities across Northern Ireland are today commemorating the Twelfth of July. The demonstrations observe the 334th anniversary of the Battle of the Boyne, a pivotal historical event for Protestant identity.
Orange Order Parades Across Northern Ireland
The Orange Order is coordinating 18 principal parades throughout Northern Ireland's six counties. These events will see thousands of lodge members participate, marching through various villages, towns, and cities. Participants include members of the Orange Institution, the Ladies Orange Institution, and the Junior Grand Orange Lodge.
The Twelfth of July is the culmination of the 'marching season', a period characterised by numerous parades and cultural displays. The events are predominantly observed by Protestant communities, with significant parades historically drawing large crowds and often requiring extensive policing operations. The commemorations continue to underscore the distinct cultural and political landscape of Northern Ireland.
