Levi Bellfield to Provide DNA Sample in Russell Family Murder Cold Case
Levi Bellfield, serving a whole-life prison sentence for multiple murders, is to provide a new DNA sample for analysis. This development follows his recent claims of responsibility for the 1996 murders of Lin Russell, 45, and her nine-year-old daughter Megan in Chillenden, Kent. The mother and daughter were ambushed and bludgeoned to death while walking home, with Megan's sister, Josie, then 12, suffering severe head injuries but surviving.
Bellfield, 55, is incarcerated for the murders of Marsha McDonnell, Amelie Delagrange, and Milly Dowler. His alleged confession to the Russell murders has prompted Kent Police to review the claims, stating that all evidence is considered on its own merit and will be subject to thorough scrutiny.
Previously, Michael Stone was convicted of the Russell murders in 1998 and again in a retrial in 2001, receiving three life sentences. Stone has consistently maintained his innocence. Bellfield's solicitor has stated his client provided a written confession to the Russell family killings to Kent Police earlier this year.
The protracted nature of this case, including a previous conviction now challenged by Bellfield's claims, underscores persistent questions regarding the reliability of forensic processes and investigative thoroughness in historic cases. The new DNA sample represents another chapter in a deeply troubling episode for British justice.
