Seaton Carew Residents Demand Lifeguard Service Extension After Recent Sea Fatalities
Residents in Seaton Carew are advocating for year-round or significantly extended lifeguard presence on the local beach, citing recent fatalities as urgent justification. The demand follows a series of drownings that have underscored the dangers of the coastline outside of peak summer months.
Currently, the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) provides lifeguard patrols at Seaton Carew exclusively during the school summer holidays. This limited operational window leaves the beach unsupervised for the majority of the year, a situation local residents argue is increasingly untenable given the beach's popularity and the evident risks.
Campaigners are highlighting the disparity between the seasonal service and the consistent public use of the beach. They contend that the current provision is insufficient to ensure public safety, particularly as coastal activities persist beyond the warmer months. Calls are mounting for local authorities and the RNLI to re-evaluate and expand the lifeguard coverage, aligning it more closely with actual beach usage patterns rather than restrictive seasonal calendars.
