Jamal Usman Jailed for Six Years Over Petrol Bomb Attack on Family Home

Jamal Usman has been sentenced to six years and four months in prison for a petrol bomb attack on a Derby family home. Derby Crown Court heard Usman, aged 33, pleaded guilty to reckless arson.

The incident took place in the early hours of 20th March, when Usman threw a lit petrol bomb at a property on Stonehill Road. The device struck an upstairs window, igniting curtains and causing a fire that spread through the house. Five people, including children, were inside the residence at the time. All managed to escape without serious injury, though one individual sustained minor burns.

Prosecutor Sarah Lody detailed how the attack caused extensive damage to the property, estimated at thousands of pounds. Usman was identified through CCTV footage and witness statements, leading to his arrest shortly after the incident.

The court heard that Usman had a prior history of volatile behaviour. Judge Shaun Smith KC, in delivering the sentence, highlighted the extreme danger Usman posed to the occupants, stating that the consequences could have been catastrophic.

The motivation behind the attack remains a subject of speculation, with no clear reason presented in court for Usman targeting the specific family. The police investigation concluded that the act was deliberate and premeditated.
