Kazakhstan Detains Senior Military Officials Following Caspian Sea Incident, 14 Swept Out

Three senior military officials in Kazakhstan have been detained following a maritime incident in the Caspian Sea where 14 service members were swept out to sea during exercises. A total of 17 personnel were involved in the event, prompting an immediate investigation into the circumstances.

The detentions include the head of the coastal guard, Kanat Bakytzhanov, along with the head of the technical department, Nurzhan Zhatkanbayev, and the commander of a marine unit, Bekbolat Zholamanov. They face accusations of negligence, a charge that carries potential prison sentences of up to seven years under Kazakh law.

Reports indicate that the incident occurred as service members were conducting exercises near the port of Aktau. Strong currents are believed to have contributed to the personnel being swept into the open water. While 14 were swept out, the remaining three managed to return to shore. The search and rescue operation for the missing individuals remains ongoing.
