Keir Starmer Resigns as Prime Minister, Labour Leadership Contest Opens July 9
Sir Keir Starmer has confirmed he will step down as the leader of the Labour Party and as Prime Minister, precipitating a leadership contest to determine the next head of government. Speaking from Downing Street, Sir Keir articulated his belief that he was no longer the most suitable individual to guide Labour into the forthcoming general election.
He has informed His Majesty the King of his decision and has requested the Labour Party’s governing body to establish a clear timeline for his replacement. Nominations for the leadership are set to open on 9 July and will conclude by the summer recess on 16 July. The process aims to have a new leader in place before Parliament resumes its session in September, with Sir Keir pledging full cooperation for an orderly transition.
Sir Keir, who was elected Labour leader in April 2020 and became Prime Minister on 5 July 2024 following the general election, will continue in the premiership until the leadership contest concludes. He affirmed his complete support for his successor, stating they would inherit "a Britain that is far stronger and fairer than the one I inherited two years ago."
This development means the UK will soon see its seventh Prime Minister since 2016. Sir Keir's decision follows considerable internal pressure, exacerbated by Andy Burnham's recent by-election victory in Makerfield, which has positioned the former Greater Manchester Mayor as a prominent contender for the leadership. Former Health Secretary Wes Streeting has also indicated his intention to participate in any leadership contest.
Discontent surrounding Sir Keir’s leadership had been mounting prior to the May election results across England, Wales, and Scotland, and intensified after his decision to reverse course on three major policies within a month. Further scrutiny arose from his appointment of Lord Mandelson as UK Ambassador to the US, particularly after information regarding Lord Mandelson’s connections to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein came to light, leading to questions about the Prime Minister’s judgement and the operations of Downing Street.
