Killer 'Hid in Shadows' Before Fatal Nottingham Attacks, Inquiry Hears
During the ongoing Nottingham Inquiry, Karim Khalil KC, the lead prosecutor at Valdo Calocane's sentencing, stated that the killer "hid in the shadows" before carrying out the fatal stabbings of Barnaby Webber, Grace O'Malley Kumar, and Ian Coates on 13th June 2023. Calocane, who also attempted to murder three others, had pleaded guilty to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility and to attempted murder.
Khalil informed the judge-led inquiry that Calocane's actions involved "extensive, comprehensive planning." This included acquiring weaponry, changing his clothing and SIM card, and deliberately concealing himself. These details, alongside an earlier fixation on a former flatmate, underscored his capacity for planning. However, Khalil stressed that this evidence did not alter the prosecution's decision to accept the diminished responsibility plea, which was supported by multiple psychiatric reports.
Sentencing and Hospital Order Explained
Calocane is currently serving an indefinite hospital order for his crimes. Khalil explained that while the prosecution had hoped for a hybrid order, the hospital order is far from lenient. He clarified to a survivor that such orders impose significant restrictions, with patients often trying to leave due to the confining nature of the environment during periods of lucidity.
