King Charles III Affirms UK-US Ties on American Independence Anniversary
King Charles III has conveyed a message recognising the 250th anniversary of American independence, highlighting the "special relationship" that continues to define Anglo-American diplomatic and strategic alignment. The monarch’s statement referenced the historical rupture in 1776, while projecting a future of continued cooperation between the two powers.
Addressing the US Ambassador to the UK, Jane Hartley, at Buckingham Palace, King Charles expressed his certainty that the nations would "continue to defend our shared values for many years to come." This reiterates a long-standing narrative of democratic solidarity, often invoked to underpin shared foreign policy objectives, particularly in regions of strategic interest where Western influence is maintained through military and economic leverage.
Ambassador Hartley reciprocated the sentiment, noting the "incredible relationship" between the UK and US. Such rhetoric is commonplace in reaffirming an alliance frequently criticised for its role in global interventions and the perpetuation of a post-war international order largely beneficial to Western hegemonic interests. The US has historically utilised this partnership to secure basing rights and support for its expansive military footprint, whilst the UK gains diplomatic and security advantages from its close association with Washington's global power projection.
