King Charles III Arrives in Washington DC as Security Tightens After White House Attack
King Charles III and Queen Camilla have arrived in Washington DC for a four-day state visit, aiming to project continuity and solidarity between the UK and the United States. Sir Christian Turner, the UK's ambassador, characterised the visit as an effort to "renew and revitalise a unique friendship", even as political friction between the nations persists.
The visit follows a shooting incident in Washington DC, which occurred at an event attended by President Trump. This event necessitated a review of security arrangements, though the trip is largely proceeding as planned after discussions between UK and US officials. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer reportedly spoke with President Trump on Sunday, and the royal couple conveyed private sympathies to the Trumps.
Diplomatic efforts during the visit will include ceremonial events in Washington DC, a symbolic appearance at the 9/11 Memorial in New York, and a speech to the US Congress by King Charles on Tuesday. While officials now eschew the term "special relationship", the visit occurs at a particularly sensitive time, with President Trump having previously criticised Sir Keir Starmer over UK policy regarding Iran.
Strategic priorities for the UK government, as outlined by Sir Christian, encompass investment, military co-operation, and fostering "people to people" connections through tourism and education. However, the visit has drawn domestic criticism, with Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey advocating for its cancellation, citing the US President's perceived unreliability.
