King Charles, Queen Camilla Lay Flowers at 9/11 Memorial During New York Visit
King Charles and Queen Camilla visited the September 11 Memorial in New York, placing a bouquet of white roses at the site. This marks their first visit to the memorial, which commemorates the almost 3,000 individuals killed in the 2001 attacks. The handwritten note accompanying the flowers expressed enduring solidarity with the American people.
During their visit, the royal couple met with families of the victims and first responders involved in the rescue efforts. New York's Mayor Zohran Mamdani and former Mayor Michael Bloomberg were among the dignitaries present at the heavily secured location.
On Tuesday, King Charles addressed the US Congress, referencing the 9/11 attacks as a moment when NATO members rallied to support the US. He drew a parallel, stating that the "same unyielding resolve is needed for the defence of Ukraine."
Separately, former President Donald Trump suggested that King Charles would have aligned with his approach on Iran, an issue that has previously generated friction between UK and US administrations. Buckingham Palace has not commented on the claim.
Queen Camilla’s engagements included a visit to the New York Public Library to promote literacy, where she was joined by actress Sarah Jessica Parker and former Vogue editor Anna Wintour. The Queen, a long-standing advocate for reading, donated a replacement 'Roo' toy to the library's Winnie-the-Pooh collection, the original of which has been missing since the 1930s. The CEO of her Queen's Reading Room charity, Vicki Perrin, highlighted a current "reading crisis," advocating for the "transformative benefits on mental health, brain health and social health" that reading provides.
King Charles also visited Harlem Grown, an initiative focused on education and healthy food, where he participated in planting activities and fed chickens with local children. The day concluded with a reception for the King's Trust, attended by celebrities including Lionel Richie, Stella McCartney, Donatella Versace, and Martha Stewart.
