Liberal Democrats Demand FA and UEFA Withdrawal from FIFA Over Integrity Concerns
The Liberal Democrats have publicly urged the Football Association (FA) and UEFA to sever their ties with FIFA, accusing the global governing body of systematically undermining the integrity of football. Sir Ed Davey, leader of the Liberal Democrats, stated that FIFA, under the presidency of Gianni Infantino, is actively "destroying the integrity of the beautiful game".
This demand follows persistent scrutiny of FIFA's governance, particularly concerning its financial practices and the controversial awarding of major tournaments. Critics frequently point to a perceived lack of transparency and accountability within the organisation, which they argue has led to a degradation of public trust in football's highest administrative echelons.
The call for withdrawal reflects a broader sentiment among some political and sporting figures in the UK that FIFA's operational conduct is no longer aligned with ethical standards expected of a major international sporting federation. The Liberal Democrats' intervention seeks to pressure domestic and European football authorities to reconsider their affiliation with an organisation that, in their view, prioritises other interests over the sport's fundamental principles.
