
Lightning Strikes Ignite Six Blazes, Destroy Kent and Sussex Homes
Six properties across Kent, East Sussex, and West Sussex have sustained severe damage after being struck by lightning during recent electrical storms. Fire and rescue services responded to multiple reports of blazes ignited by direct lightning impacts, with one incident in Kent resulting in the near-total destruction of a house.
Extensive Damage to Residential Properties
In Shoreham-by-Sea, West Sussex, a lightning strike severely damaged the roof and first floor of a residential building. A spokesperson for West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service confirmed the incident, detailing the structural compromise. Similarly, East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service reported tackling a roof fire in Burwash, near Etchingham, following another lightning strike.
Kent Fire and Rescue Service deployed multiple crews to a property in Challock, near Ashford, after it was hit. Footage from the scene showed the roof completely engulfed in flames, illustrating the destructive power of the strike. Further incidents included a bungalow in Broadstairs, Kent, which suffered significant damage to its roof and loft after being struck.
Emergency services have warned the public about the dangers of lightning and advised caution during severe weather events, as crews continue to assess the full extent of the damage across the affected counties.
