London Mayor Sadiq Khan's Car Tax Conviction Withdrawn, Investigation Underway

A conviction against London Mayor Sadiq Khan for failing to pay vehicle excise duty has been withdrawn. The case stemmed from an investigation into a sophisticated car ownership scam, which led to court proceedings against Mr Khan without his prior knowledge.

Reports indicate that a summons for the unpaid tax, totalling £180, was allegedly sent to a South London address not associated with the Mayor. The London Borough of Wandsworth initiated the prosecution on behalf of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA).

Mr Khan's office confirmed that upon learning of the conviction, the Mayor immediately instructed his legal team to investigate. His car, a 2021 Lexus NX 300H, was apparently registered at an address in the London borough of Sutton, which is now understood to be connected to the fraudulent scheme.

A spokesperson for Mr Khan stated: "Upon becoming aware of this issue, the Mayor immediately instructed his team to investigate and resolve it. The conviction has now been withdrawn."

Wandsworth Council acknowledged the withdrawal of the conviction and confirmed that their legal team would be collaborating with the DVLA to review the circumstances surrounding the case.
