M25 Section Closed Due to Warehouse Fire Smoke, Explosion Risk

A critical section of the M25 motorway, specifically between junctions 22 (London Colney) and 21A (North Orbital Road), has been shut down in both directions. This disruption is attributed to a significant warehouse fire in St Albans, Hertfordshire, which is generating dense smoke plumes across the carriageway.

Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service has confirmed that the ongoing blaze at the commercial premises necessitates the road closure. The primary concern, beyond the immediate smoke hazard, is the potential for a secondary explosion at the site, which could further endanger motorists.

Motorists are being advised to seek alternative routes. National Highways has implemented diversions, directing northbound traffic off at junction 22 via the A1081, A414, and A405 before rejoining the M25 at junction 21A. Southbound traffic follows the reverse of this route. Local authorities have not provided an estimated time for the reopening of the affected M25 section, emphasising the unpredictable nature of the incident and the ongoing efforts to bring the fire under control and assess the safety risks.
