Malaysian Police Raid Johor's Forest City Apartments Over Alleged Scam Operations
Malaysian police conducted a series of raids last month on the ambitious Forest City development in Johor, a location that has earned the moniker of a 'ghost city' due to its pervasive emptiness. These operations targeted alleged scam syndicates reportedly utilising the multitude of vacant apartments within the sprawling complex.
Forest City, a joint venture between Chinese developer Country Garden and a Malaysian state-backed entity, was originally conceived as a luxury residential and tourism hub. However, high prices, strict capital controls in China, and environmental concerns have deterred buyers, resulting in an estimated 90% of its properties remaining unoccupied since its inception. This extensive vacancy has inadvertently created fertile ground for illicit activities.
The specific nature of the alleged scams remains under investigation, but authorities have indicated a focus on operations involving online fraud and exploitation. The discovery of such activities within a development that symbolised ambitious, yet ultimately unrealised, Sino-Malaysian investment highlights the broader challenges of large-scale, often speculative, property projects in the region.
