Mean Girls UK Tour Cancelled in Belfast Amidst Street Violence, Actress Vivian Panka Expresses Fear
The 'Mean Girls' UK tour has cancelled its entire engagement at the Grand Opera House in Belfast after widespread disorder across Northern Ireland, prompted by a serious knife attack. Producers initially postponed performances from Tuesday and Wednesday, then confirmed the cancellation of the remaining run, originally scheduled until 20 June.
Vivian Panka, the Dutch actress portraying Regina George, posted on TikTok to express her alarm. Panka, the first black actress in the role, stated she has not left her accommodation since Tuesday and has kept her blinds closed. She described the situation as 'very scary', noting 'fires in the street' and her particular worry as a person of colour, asserting that 'people are actively targeting black people'.
Panka conveyed her distress over angry messages from fans regarding the cancellations, appealing for understanding of her fears. She clarified that the cancellation was a safety measure for the cast, crew, and audience, not a result of performer illness.
The Grand Opera House released a statement confirming the cancellation due to 'uncertainty caused by the unrest'. The theatre expressed disappointment and stated that ticket holders would be contacted directly for refund arrangements.
