Merseyside Shopworker Sacked for Tackling Suspected Bacon Thief in Bootle Store
A 56-year-old shopworker in Bootle, Merseyside, has been dismissed from her position after confronting a suspected shoplifter. Eileen Fox stated she was sacked on 12 May from the One Stop convenience store on Randall Drive following an incident on 27 April where she challenged a woman suspected of stealing packets of bacon.
Fox, who had been employed by the company since September 2022, described grabbing the suspect's coat sleeve. The individual reportedly collided with a metal stand before fleeing the store. Fox maintains she acted on instinct, stating, "It's very harsh what they've done – it's very upsetting." She further contended that her actions were exaggerated in the dismissal letter, which claimed she had "followed" the shoplifter and "slammed her into a metal stand", an account Fox disputes.
One Stop management, in their dismissal letter, stated that Fox had "put the business at risk" and believed her explanation of acting on instinct suggested a potential for future policy breaches. The company's policy advises staff "never to risk their own safety" and provides training on incident response. Fox acknowledged breaching company policy but highlighted ongoing staff unease following a prior robbery at the store by a repeat offender.
Merseyside Police were informed of the incident. Fox is currently seeking advice regarding potential legal action against her former employer.
