Met Police Officers Charged Over Fatal Collision
PC Chris Johnson faces a charge of causing death by dangerous driving, while former PC Danny Tomkins has been charged with dangerous driving. The charges stem from an investigation by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) into the incident.
Details of the Incident
The tragic collision occurred on 17 October 2024, on the A20 near Kidbrooke Park in Kidbrooke. An unmarked police car was involved in the crash. The 38-year-old driver's unborn child died at the scene, and she subsequently passed away in hospital.
PC Johnson was reportedly driving the vehicle directly involved in the collision. The charge against former PC Tomkins, who was operating a second police car, relates to his alleged manner of driving at the time of the incident.
Court Proceedings Imminent
Both officers are scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on 28 May. The IOPC concluded its comprehensive investigation into the matter in October of last year.
Acting Detective Chief Superintendent James Derham commented on the ongoing grief of the family, describing the incident as "truly terrible and heartbreaking". He emphasised the importance of not prejudicing the upcoming court proceedings and declined further comment at this stage.
