Metropolitan Police Investigate Officer Using Handcuffs on Youth in South London
A Metropolitan Police Service officer is under investigation after a video emerged depicting the officer using handcuffs to strike a youth during an arrest in south London. The force has confirmed an internal review is underway, cautioning that the widely shared footage captures only a brief segment of a larger incident.
The incident, which occurred in Lewisham, shows uniformed officers attempting to detain an individual. The video appears to show an officer making contact with the youth using a pair of handcuffs. Following the widespread dissemination of the video, a formal complaint was lodged by the youth's family.
Metropolitan Police officials stated that the Directorate of Professional Standards has been notified and is now leading the inquiry. They emphasised that all available evidence, including body-worn camera footage from the arresting officers, will be thoroughly examined to establish the full context of the interaction.
