Michel Barnier Rejects UK 'A La Carte' Access to EU Single Market
Michel Barnier, the European Union's former chief Brexit negotiator, has issued a stark warning to the UK regarding its future relationship with the bloc's single market. He asserted that British attempts to follow economic rules 'a la carte' would be rejected by EU member countries.
Barnier emphasised that there are 'no small circles' within the single market, stressing that the UK's participation hinges on accepting the full suite of rules, including the jurisdiction of the European Court of Justice and contributions to the EU budget. This uncompromising stance underscores the enduring rigidity of the EU's position on market access.
His comments signal a clear message to any British political faction contemplating a closer alignment with the EU single market without fully embracing its foundational principles. The former negotiator's statement reaffirms the EU's consistent refusal to permit what it perceives as an uneven playing field or a dilution of its core tenets, ensuring that access remains conditional on comprehensive adherence.
