Patricia Lashley's Children Discover Mother Was Murdered After Decades of Believing Abandonment
Patricia Lashley, a mother of four, was murdered in October 1985, a fact unknown to her children until very recently. For 36 years, her remains lay unidentified after being discovered in a shallow grave in Norfolk. Her children, who were all under seven at the time of her disappearance, grew up believing she had simply abandoned them.
Ms Lashley's body was found in Cockley Cley, near Swaffham, by a man out walking his dog. Despite extensive forensic efforts at the time, her identity remained a mystery. It was only in 2021, when improved DNA techniques were applied, that detectives were able to link the remains to Ms Lashley, who would have been 26 years old.
Her eldest daughter, now 44, recounted the emotional toll of believing her mother had willingly left. "We were told she'd just upped and left. We lived with that," she stated. The revelation of Ms Lashley's murder has brought a complex mix of grief and a measure of closure, allowing the family to understand the true circumstances of her disappearance after decades of uncertainty and pain.
