Ministry of Defence Concealed Nuclear Test Veterans' Records, Former Minister Alleges

Johnny Mercer, a former Minister for the Armed Forces, has accused the Ministry of Defence of intentionally withholding information regarding the health records of veterans involved in Cold War nuclear tests. Mr Mercer's allegations centre on the MoD's handling of evidence that could link the veterans' exposure to radiation during tests conducted between 1952 and 1967 with subsequent severe health problems.

Veterans from the British nuclear test programme have long reported a range of chronic illnesses, including cancers and infertility, which they attribute to their service. They argue that inadequate protective measures during the tests led to significant radiation exposure.

The MoD has consistently maintained that there is no causal link between participation in the tests and long-term health issues. However, Mr Mercer's intervention casts a critical light on the transparency of government departments when faced with claims from those who served in hazardous conditions. The ongoing dispute underscores the challenges faced by veterans in securing recognition and support for conditions they believe are service-related, often requiring protracted campaigns against entrenched departmental positions.
