Morgan McSweeney Admits Error in Lord Mandelson US Ambassador Recommendation
Morgan McSweeney, formerly the Prime Minister's top aide, told MPs that his suggestion of Lord Peter Mandelson as the next UK Ambassador to Washington was a "serious mistake." Testifying before the Public Administration and Constitutional Affairs Committee, McSweeney explained his reasoning behind the recommendation and the subsequent internal processes.
McSweeney stated that while he recommended Mandelson directly to the Prime Minister, he believed that the Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office (FCDO) would then undertake a full and proper vetting procedure for such a sensitive diplomatic appointment. However, he disclosed that the Prime Minister was not made aware of the initial recommendation or the subsequent FCDO's handling of the matter.
The controversy centres on the perceived lack of transparency and due diligence surrounding a high-profile diplomatic posting. The FCDO's Permanent Under-Secretary, Sir Philip Barton, previously told MPs that he had not been involved in the discussions regarding Mandelson's potential appointment. This raised questions about the standard procedures for ambassadorial selections and the extent to which official channels were bypassed or ignored in this instance, potentially undermining established protocols for senior diplomatic roles.
