Mother Convicted of Culpable Homicide After Infant Daughter Dahlia-Rose Dies from Hairdryer Burns
A Scottish court has convicted Courtney Gartshore, 28, of culpable homicide following the death of her three-month-old daughter, Dahlia-Rose. The infant suffered severe burns from a hairdryer at Gartshore's home in Glasgow in November 2022 and died five days later.
Prosecution evidence detailed how Dahlia-Rose sustained full thickness burns to 20% of her body, primarily affecting her hands and forearms. Despite Gartshore's claims that her daughter was injured by scalding bath water, medical experts testified that the nature of the burns was inconsistent with immersion in water. Instead, the injuries indicated direct contact with a hot, dry heat source.
During the trial, the jury heard that Gartshore left her daughter unattended in a room where a hairdryer was operating. The device was subsequently found to be defective, emitting excessive heat. The court concluded that Gartshore's negligence directly led to the fatal injuries.
Gartshore is scheduled for sentencing next month. The verdict underscores the critical need for parental vigilance regarding household appliances and the devastating consequences of neglect.
