New Mexico Judge Levies $567 Million Fine Against Meta for Child Safety Failures

A New Mexico District Court judge has imposed a further $567 million penalty on Meta Platforms Inc., the owner of Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp, citing the company's failures in safeguarding children. This ruling, which adds to an existing $200 million fine from January, constitutes the most substantial child safety-related financial sanction ever levied against a social media corporation.

The Attorney General of New Mexico initiated legal proceedings against Meta, alleging that the company’s platforms are instrumental in facilitating child sexual exploitation and have neglected to implement adequate protective measures. These legal actions assert that Meta has deliberately designed its products in a manner that exposes minors to significant risks, prioritizing engagement and profit over user safety.

Meta has stated its disagreement with the ruling and indicated an intention to appeal, characterising the judgment as factually and legally erroneous. The technology giant has previously outlined its efforts to combat child exploitation on its platforms, including collaborations with law enforcement and the deployment of detection technologies.
