NHS Consultants and Specialist Doctors Begin 48-Hour Walkout Across England
Consultants and specialist doctors across England began a 48-hour period of strike action at 07:00 BST today. This industrial action, coordinated by the British Medical Association (BMA), is expected to lead to the cancellation of the majority of routine and elective medical services, including non-urgent operations and appointments.
Hospitals have been instructed to maintain comprehensive emergency care coverage throughout the strike. This provision is intended to safeguard patients requiring urgent medical attention, although significant disruption to other services is considered unavoidable.
This marks the first time consultants have initiated strike action in over a decade, with previous industrial disputes largely averted or resolved through negotiation. The BMA has indicated that the dispute centres on pay and working conditions, alleging a substantial real-terms pay erosion for senior medical staff over recent years.
Government officials have reiterated calls for negotiation to resolve the dispute, emphasising the potential impact on patient care. However, no immediate breakthrough in talks appears imminent, suggesting further disruption could occur if a resolution is not found.
