Nigel Farage Received £5 Million From Reform UK Donor Christopher Harborne For Brexit Campaigning
Nigel Farage, leader of Reform UK, has publicly stated that a £5 million payment from billionaire donor Christopher Harborne was given as a "reward for campaigning for Brexit" over a period of 27 years. Farage informed The Sun that he "cannot be bought by anybody" and described the money as being provided on a "completely unconditional basis."
Farage had previously argued he was under "no obligation" to declare the substantial gift, as it was received prior to his election as the Member of Parliament for Clacton. He characterised the funds as being for his "personal security" and maintained it "wasn't political in any sense at all."
Opponents of Reform UK, including both Conservative and Labour parties, have contended that Farage should have declared the gift in the MPs' register of interests upon his election in 2024. This has prompted the Parliamentary Standards Commissioner to launch an inquiry to ascertain whether Farage contravened Commons regulations by accepting and not declaring the funds. Farage has expressed no concern regarding this investigation.
Christopher Harborne, a British cryptocurrency investor residing in Thailand, echoed Farage's sentiments in April, telling The Telegraph that he "wasn't expecting anything in return apart from ensuring his safety" when he provided the gift. Harborne further elaborated that he gave the money to Farage "because of my great admiration for the decades of work he had done to achieve Brexit."
The Commons code of conduct stipulates that new MPs must register all current financial interests and any registrable benefits, excluding earnings, received in the 12 months preceding their election, within one month of taking their seat. While "purely personal gifts or benefits" from family or commercial loans are generally exempt, the rules advise considering "both the possible motive of the giver and the use to which the gift is to be put," adding, "if there is any doubt, the benefit should be registered."
Harborne also made a £9 million donation to Reform UK last year, marking the largest single donation by a living individual to a UK political party. In total, he contributed £12 million to Reform in 2025, having previously donated to the Conservative Party.
