Nissan Consolidates Sunderland Production, Cuts 900 European Jobs Amid Restructure
Japanese car manufacturer Nissan confirmed the consolidation of two production lines into one at its Sunderland facility, a move the company states will not result in direct job losses at the UK plant.
European Workforce Reductions Announced
However, Nissan has initiated discussions concerning a reduction of approximately 10% of its European workforce. This encompasses proposals for the partial closure of its warehouse in Barcelona and a transition to an importer model for vehicle distribution in Nordic countries.
A Nissan spokesperson attributed these changes to the company's RE:Nissan recovery plan, intended to cultivate a "leaner, more resilient business that adapts quickly to market changes." The spokesperson elaborated, "We have opened discussions with our European employees with a view to simplifying our structures, reducing complexity, and ensuring we operate in a sustainable and profitable way."
The company is reportedly exploring partnerships with external firms to utilise portions of its Sunderland factory, though specific details and potential collaborators remain undisclosed by Nissan.
