North Korean Football Squad Visits South Korea for Under-17 Women's Asian Cup
A North Korean women's football squad is scheduled to visit South Korea later this month, marking the first such visit in 16 years. The team will participate in the Under-17 Women's Asian Cup, hosted in South Korea.
The tournament, organised by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), will take place from 7 to 20 May. North Korea's presence in a competition held on South Korean soil represents a notable, if infrequent, instance of cross-border engagement, largely confined to sports.
The last occasion a North Korean football team competed in South Korea was in 2007, during a qualifying match for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Such athletic exchanges remain largely insulated from the persistent geopolitical friction characterising relations between the two Koreas.
