Ontario Premier Doug Ford Reverses Course, Sells £16.5 Million Private Jet After Criticism
Ontario Premier Doug Ford has confirmed that a private jet, recently acquired for official government travel at a cost of CAD#28.9 million, will be sold. The decision follows a swift backlash from political opponents and taxpayer advocacy groups, who criticised the purchase as extravagant.
Ford’s office initially justified the acquisition of the pre-owned 2016 Bombardier Challenger 650, citing its intended use for critical inter-provincial and US travel, particularly for advocating against US tariffs. However, upon confirmation of the purchase last Friday, the move was widely condemned, with critics labelling it a “gravy plane” and out of touch with public sentiment.
In a statement issued on Sunday, Ford conceded, “Despite the best of intentions, I have heard and agree that now is not the right time for the expense of a government plane.” He indicated that the province is collaborating with Bombardier and other partners to facilitate a rapid sale.
Critics remain unconvinced by the Premier’s change of heart. Marit Stiles, leader of the Ontario New Democratic Party, suggested Ford only reversed the decision due to intense public pressure. Interim Ontario Liberal Leader John Fraser accused Ford of aspiring to a “billionaire” lifestyle at the taxpayer’s expense.
This controversy unfolds as Ford’s approval ratings, according to an Angus Reid Poll earlier this year, stand at approximately 31%, among the lowest for any Canadian premier, despite securing a third consecutive majority government last year.
