Parents' Murder Sentences for Infant Son Miguel Increased by Appeals Court
The Court of Appeal has substantially increased the sentences for Klevi Pirjani, 38, and Nivalda Pirjani, 35, following their conviction for the murder of their infant son, Miguel. Lord Justice Holroyde, presiding, ruled the initial prison terms were unduly lenient, citing the aggravating factors of the case.
Klevi Pirjani's minimum term was extended from 20 years to 26 years. Nivalda Pirjani, initially sentenced to a minimum of 17 years, will now serve at least 21 years before being considered for parole. The couple were found guilty of murdering eight-week-old Miguel in March 2024.
During the trial, evidence revealed Miguel suffered 53 rib fractures, 17 fractures to his left leg, and 13 fractures to his right leg. He also sustained a fractured skull and a brain haemorrhage. Medical experts testified that the injuries were inflicted over several weeks leading up to his death. The prosecution detailed a pattern of systemic abuse, rather than a single catastrophic event.
The Attorney General's Office had referred the original sentences for review, arguing they did not adequately reflect the gravity of the crime. The Appeal Court's decision underscores a firmer stance on cases involving severe child abuse resulting in death.
