Paris Police Implement Mandatory Helmets, High-Visibility Gear for E-Scooter Users
Paris police have enacted new rules for electric scooter usage, requiring riders to wear helmets and high-visibility vests. This measure follows a concerning rise in fatal accidents involving e-scooters within the French capital.
New Safety Mandates and Penalties
Under the revised regulations, which took effect recently, individuals riding e-scooters are now legally obliged to wear head protection and reflective clothing, particularly during night-time hours or periods of poor visibility. Non-compliance with these new safety requirements can result in fines reaching €135.
Beyond the personal protective equipment, authorities are also intensifying efforts to enforce existing traffic laws, including prohibiting tandem riding on single-person scooters and the use of pavements for travel. The police presence, reportedly doubled in some areas, aims to curtail hazardous riding practices that have contributed to the uptick in incidents. Officials state that the primary objective is to enhance rider safety and reduce the burden on emergency services.
